Concession and hedging for balanced argumentC1
用 While/Although/Despite... It could be argued that... / There is some truth in... / To a certain extent...
使用让步连接词(while, although)和模糊限制表达(it is possible that, arguably)让论点更有深度,也显出语言的灵活度。例如,「While progress often brings benefits, it is important to recognise that not all costs are justified.」

例句

While it is true that automation increases efficiency, one should not underestimate the social disruption it may cause.
There is some truth in the view that economic growth lifts societies out of poverty, but it would be misleading to ignore its environmental consequences.

✗ Although progress is good, but it has costs.✓ Although progress is good, it has costs.
↑ 提分:8.5档能动用更多样的让步结构(如 Granted that..., For all its benefits,...)
Emphasis through cleft sentences and frontingC1
It is ... that ... 强调句;What ... is ...
例如 「People often ignore the long-term impact」 可改为 「What people often ignore is the long-term impact」 或 「It is the long-term impact that people often ignore.」

What is frequently overlooked in the debate is the human cost of progress.
It is by weighing both the benefits and the drawbacks that we can make informed decisions.

✗ It is progress what brings both opportunities and challenges.✓ It is progress that brings both opportunities and challenges.
强调句必须用 that(或 who 指人),不能用 what。
↑ 提分:8.5档能将强调结构与倒装(如 「Not only does progress create..., but it also...」)

Is Progress Always Worth the Price?
In recent decades, the pace of change has accelerated dramatically. From smartphones to artificial intelligence, innovations that once seemed like science fiction have become everyday realities. On the surface, this is a story of triumph: lives are longer, information is more accessible, and many tasks that once took hours now take seconds. Yet a growing chorus of voices questions whether we are paying too high a price for such convenience. Critics point to several troubling trends. The first is environmental: our reliance on technology has accelerated resource depletion and generated mountains of electronic waste. The second is social: digital platforms designed to connect us have, paradoxically, been linked to increased loneliness and political polarisation. And then there is the economic dimension: automation, while boosting efficiency, has rendered many jobs obsolete, widening the gap between the skilled and the unskilled. Proponents of progress respond that these problems are not inevitable—they can be addressed through smarter regulation and greater corporate accountability. Moreover, they argue, the benefits of progress far outweigh the drawbacks: medical breakthroughs, for example, have saved countless lives, and green technologies are beginning to tackle the environmental crisis. It is not progress itself that is the problem, they insist, but the way we manage it. Ultimately, the question is not whether progress is good or bad, but what kind of progress we want and who gets to decide. As one commentator put it, ‘We need to stop asking “how fast” and start asking “for whom”.’ Only by broadening the conversation can we hope to strike a balance between innovation and human well-being.

Tutor
So, your report looks at automation and jobs—what did you find most surprising in the data?
Leila
Well, I was struck by how quickly job displacement is happening in some sectors. For example, in manufacturing, almost 15% of roles have been automated in the last five years.
Sam
But Leila, don't you think that figure needs context? In the same period, new roles—like robot monitoring—have grown by about 8%.
Leila
True, but those new jobs require completely different skills. It's the mismatch that worries me.
Tutor
That's a valid point. What about the social impact? Did your research cover that?
Sam
Yes, we found that regions heavily dependent on traditional industries have seen higher levels of unemployment and associated stress. It's not just an economic issue; it's a community one.
Tutor
That's a solid analysis. Make sure your recommendations address that social dimension.
gap_fill1.In manufacturing, nearly ___% of roles have been automated in the last five years.
✅ 15 — Leila 说 almost 15% of roles have been automated...
MCQ2.Sam mentions a counterpoint regarding job numbers. What is it?
  • A Automation has slowed down
  • B New job types have grown by 8%
  • C Manufacturing is booming
✅ B — Sam 说 new roles... have grown by about 8%.
MCQ3.What does Leila identify as the main challenge?
  • A lack of data
  • B skills mismatch
  • C too few new jobs
✅ B — Leila: It's the mismatch that worries me.
matching4.Which speaker expresses each opinion? - worries about community impact: ___
  • Leila
  • Sam
✅ Sam — Sam 提到 regions... have seen higher unemployment and stress. It's... a community one.
(I'm struck by, don't you think..., that's a valid point)对于答题至关重要。

Some people argue that technological and economic progress inevitably harms society and the environment. Others believe that such progress is essential for improving human well-being. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Whether progress inevitably causes harm, or is fundamental to human advancement, is a debate that touches every aspect of modern life. While there are undeniable costs associated with development, I believe that progress is not inherently destructive—rather, its impact depends on how we shape it. On the one hand, those who focus on the drawbacks have compelling evidence. The rapid expansion of industry has led to environmental degradation, from deforestation to rising pollution levels. Similarly, digital technologies have been linked to social isolation and the erosion of privacy. A particularly striking example is automation, which has displaced workers in traditional sectors, often with little support for retraining. On the other hand, proponents of progress rightly point out that it has brought about enormous gains. Medical breakthroughs, such as vaccines and gene therapy, have saved countless lives. The internet has democratised access to education, and renewable energy technologies are beginning to address the climate crisis. To dismiss these achievements would be to ignore the very real improvements in life expectancy and quality of life worldwide. In my opinion, the issue is not whether progress is good or bad, but how it is managed. What determines the outcome is the framework within which change occurs—regulation, ethical standards, and inclusive policies. It is only when we neglect these that the costs become unacceptable. Therefore, rather than resisting change, we should invest in steering it towards equitable and sustainable outcomes.

口语 Speaking

Part 1

Q: Do you think life is better now than in the past?
By and large, yes—we have better healthcare, more opportunities, and greater comfort. But there are definitely aspects that have got worse, like the constant pressure to be available online or the loss of some community feeling. So it's a mixed bag, really.
Q: What kind of progress do you value most?
Personally, I'd say medical progress. The fact that we can now treat diseases that were once a death sentence is nothing short of remarkable. Having said that, I think it's important that such advances are accessible to everyone, not just the privileged few.
💡 用 personally, I'd say 等口语引入观点,having said that 进行自我修正,体现 C1 的灵活口语。

Part 2 ·

Describe a change or development that you think has had some negative effects. You should say: what the change is; what positive effects it has; what negative effects it has; and explain whether you think the positive effects outweigh the negative ones.
I'd like to talk about the widespread adoption of smartphones. On the positive side, they've revolutionised communication, making it possible to stay in touch with people anywhere and access information instantly. However, the downsides are increasingly apparent. What I find most worrying is the impact on mental health—studies suggest a link between heavy social media use and anxiety, particularly among young people. There's also the issue of constant distraction, which I think takes a toll on our ability to concentrate. If I had to weigh up the pros and cons, I'd say the positives still outweigh the negatives, but only just. The real challenge is learning to use the technology without letting it use us. It's a tool, not a master.
(What I find most worrying is...),take a toll on 等短语,结尾精炼总结。

Part 3

Q: Is it possible for progress to be entirely positive?
I doubt it, to be honest. Any major change will create winners and losers, at least in the short term. The key is to ensure that the benefits are widely shared and that we have safety nets for those who are displaced. It's not about avoiding progress—it's about managing its side effects.
💡 使用 to be honest, I doubt it 等口语化表达,观点明确且辩证。
Q: How can societies minimise the negative effects of progress?
I think it comes down to two things: regulation and education. Governments need to set clear rules, for example on data privacy or environmental standards, to prevent the worst excesses. At the same time, education systems must adapt so that people have the skills to thrive in a changing economy. Without those, progress can easily become destructive.
💡 用 it comes down to, at the same time 等连接词组织论点,逻辑清晰。

on the flip side用于引出事物的另一面,相当于 however
weigh up the pros and cons权衡利弊,口语中常用于表达思考过程

口语中多使用强调结构和地道短语,如 what I find most... is...,可以有效提升 LR 和 GRA 分数。
