Conditional inversionC2
Should + subject + bare infinitive ... ; Were + subject + to-infinitive ... ; Had + subject + past participle ...
将if省略,把should, were, had提到主语前构成倒装条件句。例如:「Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.」比「If you require...」

Should you wish to discuss the matter further, I would be happy to arrange a meeting.
Were it not for the dedication of volunteers, many social programmes would cease to operate.

✗ Should you will require...✓ Should you require...
✗ Were the funding is cut...✓ Were the funding to be cut...
Were倒装表示与现在或将来事实相反,用to be而非is。
Register and nuance control in formal correspondenceC2
选用正式措辞(e.g., ‘I would be grateful if...’, ‘I wish to express concern regarding...’),避免口语化表达;使用情态动词(would, could, might)表示礼貌和委婉;采用名词化结构增加客观性。
例如使用「I am writing to express my concern about...」而非「I」m worried about...」。此外,巧妙运用情态动词和被动语态能增加委婉度,如「It would be appreciated if immediate attention could be given to this matter.」

例句

I am writing to draw your attention to an issue of considerable urgency.
I trust that this matter will receive the attention it deserves at the earliest possible opportunity.

✗ I want you to fix this problem as soon as possible.✓ I would be grateful if this problem could be addressed at your earliest convenience.

Internal Memo: Redundancy Consultation
MEMORANDUM To: All Staff From: Human Resources Director Date: 12 May 2025 Subject: Proposed Organisational Restructuring As you are aware, the company has been facing significant financial challenges owing to the downturn in the global economy. Despite our best efforts to streamline operations, it has become necessary to consider more fundamental changes to ensure the long-term viability of the organisation. In light of this, a proposal has been developed to restructure several departments. Regrettably, this is likely to result in a reduction of the workforce. The proposal suggests that approximately 15% of positions across Sales, Marketing, and Administration may be at risk of redundancy. We are committed to handling this process with fairness and transparency. A formal consultation period will commence on 19 May 2025 and will last for a minimum of 30 days, in line with statutory requirements. During this time, all affected employees will be given the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about the proposal, ask questions, and suggest alternative measures to avoid compulsory redundancies. Individual meetings will be scheduled with those whose roles are directly affected. Additionally, group consultation sessions will be held to provide information and gather feedback. Detailed briefing packs will be distributed later this week. We understand this news may cause concern and anxiety. Employee support services are available via the confidential helpline (ext. 2456). We urge you to make use of this resource if needed. The leadership team genuinely values your contribution and is dedicated to treating everyone with dignity and respect throughout this unsettling period. We will do our utmost to mitigate the impact on individuals and to support those seeking alternative employment. Should you have any immediate questions, please contact your line manager or a member of the HR team.

MCQ3.What is the main purpose of this memorandum?
  • A To inform staff about a restructuring proposal and consultation process

Receptionist
Housing Services, how can I help you?
Caller
Hello, I was hoping you could point me in the right direction. I'm ringing about the emergency housing scheme I read about online.
Receptionist
Of course. Is this an urgent situation? May I have your full name and postcode first, please?
Caller
Yes, it's rather pressing. My name's Angela Price, and my postcode is BN2 5PQ.
Receptionist
Thank you. I'll just pull up your details. ... I can see you're on the housing register already. The scheme you referred to is for those facing sudden homelessness. Is that your situation?
Caller
Not quite yet, but I've been served a section 21 notice and I need to be out by the end of the month. I've got nowhere to go.
Receptionist
I understand. In that case, you do qualify to apply. I'll transfer you to our emergency housing officer, Mr Patel. But before I do, can you confirm that you haven't made any other applications through the council?
Caller
No, I haven't. I was hoping this would be straightforward.
Receptionist
It should be, once we have all the necessary documentation. Could you have your tenancy agreement and the section 21 notice ready when you speak to Mr Patel?

I will. Thanks for your help.

You recently attended a public consultation about the proposed construction of a new shopping centre in your neighbourhood. The centre would replace a local park. You have strong feelings against this plan. Write a letter to the local council. In your letter: - explain why the park is important to the community - describe the negative impact the shopping centre would have - suggest what the council should do instead Begin your letter with: Dear Sir or Madam, Write at least 150 words.
Dear Sir or Madam, I am writing to express my profound objection to the proposed development of a shopping centre on the site of Fairview Park, a matter which was discussed at the public consultation on 5th May. The park serves as an indispensable green space for residents of all ages. It is not merely an aesthetic asset; it is where children play safely, elderly residents meet daily, and community events are held. Its loss would deprive the neighbourhood of a vital social hub that has fostered cohesion for decades. Moreover, the park plays a crucial role in mitigating air pollution in an increasingly congested area. Should the shopping centre be built, the repercussions would be severe. Traffic congestion would worsen considerably, leading to greater noise and emissions. Local independent shops, which have long been the backbone of our high street, would face significant threat from large chain stores. The very character of our community would be undermined. I strongly urge the council to reconsider this plan. Could the development not be repurposed elsewhere, perhaps on a brownfield site on the outskirts? Alternatively, the council might explore ways to enhance the park with improved facilities that would benefit all. I trust that you will weigh the long-term social and environmental costs against any short-term commercial gain. I look forward to your considered response. Yours faithfully, [Full Name]

口语 Speaking

Part 1

Q: Is there enough for young people to do in your hometown?
To a degree, yes. There are a few leisure centres and a cinema complex, but I wouldn't say the options are exactly abundant, particularly for teenagers. Some youth clubs have closed down recently, which is a real shame. I think a lot of young people end up hanging around with very little to do, and that can lead to its own problems.
💡 使用「to a degree」进行限定,展现分寸;「a real shame」口语化但不随意。
Q: How has your neighbourhood changed over the years?
Quite dramatically, actually. When I was younger it was a fairly quiet residential area, but now there's been a wave of new developments – more apartment blocks, more traffic. I suppose it's become more vibrant, but I can't help feeling that it's lost some of its sense of community. The pace of change has been unsettling for a lot of the older residents.

Part 2 ·

Describe a social change that has happened in your country over the last few decades. You should say: what the change is; what caused it; how it has affected people; and explain whether you think this change has been positive or negative overall.
One of the most profound social changes I've witnessed is the shift in family structures – specifically the move away from the extended family model towards nuclear families. Several factors have driven this: increased urbanisation has meant younger people moving to cities for work, leaving parents and grandparents behind; also, changing social norms mean that independence is now prioritised over collective living. The impact has been mixed. On the one hand, nuclear families can be more mobile and flexible economically. On the other hand, we've seen a noticeable weakening of the traditional support network. Elderly relatives may find themselves isolated, and childcare becomes a much more difficult juggling act for working parents. I'd say that while the change was perhaps inevitable, it hasn't been an entirely positive development. We've gained autonomy but, arguably, lost a degree of social resilience. The challenge now is to find ways to bridge that gap, perhaps through community initiatives that replicate some of the support an extended family used to provide.

Part 3

Q: In what ways can communities prevent themselves from becoming too divided?
That's a complex question. I think it starts with creating shared spaces where people from different backgrounds naturally interact – that could be well-designed public parks, community festivals, or even things like free skill-sharing workshops. It's also about inclusive planning; if new developments are only for the wealthy, you create physical divides that mirror social ones. Crucially, communication is vital. When people feel their voices are heard in decisions that affect them, it fosters a sense of ownership and reduces resentment. None of these are quick fixes, but collectively they can strengthen the social fabric.
Q: Should governments prioritise funding for social welfare programmes over other areas like defence or infrastructure?
There's a strong case for making social welfare a priority, because a society that fails to look after its most vulnerable members fundamentally undermines its own stability. That said, I don't think it's a simple either-or scenario. Defence and infrastructure are also essential for a functioning country. The real issue is how resources are allocated efficiently and whether those allocations reflect genuine public need. It often requires a delicate balance, and what frustrates people is when there seems to be a disconnect between budget decisions and the reality on the ground.
💡 不极端,展示平衡思维;「delicate balance」, 「reality on the ground」等表达地道。

can't help feeling that...
the reality on the ground实际情况(与理论或报告相对)
