Fronting and Inversion for EmphasisC1
Only by understanding the power of fame can we grasp its dangers.' 这里,'only by...' Great is the responsibility that comes with influence.' His influence I cannot deny.'

Only when celebrities use their platforms responsibly do they become true role models.
Rarely do we consider the psychological toll of fame.

✗ Only after the scandal he apologised.✓ Only after the scandal did he apologise.
Emphasis: Cleft Sentences and 'What' ClausesC1
It is/was ... that/who ... ; What ... + be ...
It is the constant scrutiny that takes the heaviest toll on celebrities.' What many fans overlook is the person behind the public image.'

It is the ability to shape public opinion that gives celebrities such immense power.
What distinguishes a true role model from a mere celebrity is a sense of accountability.

✗ What I admire him is his honesty.✓ What I admire about him is his honesty.
'what'从句需要补充完整介词,否则语法不通。
↑ 提分:8.5分考生能自然地将强调句与被动语态、名词化结合,写出既流畅又有高级感的句子。

Celebrity Activists: Genuine or Opportunistic?
In recent years, a growing number of celebrities have taken on the role of social activists, lending their names and platforms to causes ranging from climate change to human rights. This trend has been met with both applause and scepticism. While some see it as a powerful way to raise awareness, others dismiss it as little more than a publicity stunt. Supporters argue that celebrities, with their massive reach, can bring urgent issues to the attention of millions. When a pop star tweets about a humanitarian crisis, that message can spread faster than any official campaign. Moreover, many stars use their own wealth to fund initiatives or establish charities, demonstrating a genuine commitment. Research suggests that celebrity involvement can significantly boost donations and volunteer numbers for a cause. Critics, however, have a different take. They point out that the media-savvy nature of celebrities means they are skilled at crafting a public image that may not match reality. A celebrity might endorse a charity event one day and be photographed promoting a luxury product the next, raising questions about consistency. Furthermore, the spotlight tends to shift quickly; today's cause may be forgotten tomorrow when a new trend emerges. The key, perhaps, lies not in whether a famous person's motives are pure, but in whether their actions lead to tangible benefits. If a charity gains funding or a movement gains momentum thanks to a celebrity's involvement, the outcome matters more than the intention. After all, influence is a tool, and like any tool, its value is measured by what it accomplishes.

Speaker
Good evening, everyone. Tonight I'd like to talk about a topic that's often debated in our sector: working with celebrity ambassadors. When we first considered having a famous face represent our charity, we had mixed feelings. On one hand, a celebrity can bring enormous attention. On the other hand, we were worried about whether the partnership would seem superficial. Eventually, we decided to go ahead, but with clear guidelines in place.
Speaker
First and foremost, we looked for someone whose personal values aligned with our mission. It wasn't about their number of followers; it was about genuine passion. We turned down several well-known figures who saw it as just a photo opportunity. Then, we established a two-year commitment, not just a one-off event, so that the partnership could really make a difference.
Speaker
The results have been promising. Donations increased by over thirty per cent in the first six months, and our social media engagement tripled. However, we also learned some lessons. For instance, public opinion can turn quickly if the celebrity does something controversial. That's why we now have a crisis communication plan in place.
Speaker
So, if you're considering a similar approach, my advice is: choose carefully, make sure the relationship is a long-term one, and always be prepared for the unexpected. It's a risk, but when done right, it can be a game-changer.
gap_fill1.The charity looked for a celebrity whose personal values ___ with their mission.
✅ aligned — Speaker 说 'looked for someone whose personal values aligned with our mission'。
MCQ2.Why did the charity turn down some celebrities?
  • A They were too expensive
  • B They lacked a large following
  • C They saw it only as a photo opportunity
✅ C — Speaker 说 'We turned down several well-known figures who saw it as just a photo opportunity.'
gap_fill3.Donations rose by over ___ per cent in the first six months.
✅ thirty / 30 — Donations increased by over thirty per cent...
gap_fill4.The charity now has a ___ communication plan in case of a controversy.
✅ crisis — Speaker 说 'we now have a crisis communication plan in place.'

Some people believe that celebrities have a responsibility to use their fame to influence positive social change. Others think that celebrities should not get involved in social or political issues. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Whether famous individuals should use their platform for activism is a matter of heated debate. Some argue that they bear a moral duty to drive positive change, while others contend that they should refrain from engaging in social or political matters. I believe that while celebrity involvement can be beneficial, it must be approached with caution and sincerity. Advocates of celebrity activism highlight the immense reach that public figures enjoy. A single post from a well-known actor can draw attention to a neglected crisis, reaching audiences far beyond traditional campaigns. Moreover, when celebrities commit their own time and resources to a cause, their influence can translate into tangible results, such as increased donations or policy changes. In this light, refusing to act could be seen as a wasted opportunity to do good. Opponents, however, rightly point to the risks. The public persona of a celebrity is often carefully crafted, and their involvement may be motivated more by self-promotion than genuine concern. This can undermine the very cause they claim to support. Furthermore, celebrities are rarely experts on complex social issues; their oversimplified views may do more harm than good. There is also the problem of accountability—if a celebrity’s actions spark backlash, the organisation they support may suffer collateral damage. My view is that the value of celebrity activism depends not on their fame but on the authenticity and durability of their commitment. Those who are willing to learn, to show up consistently, and to use their influence responsibly can indeed be a force for good. However, society should not rely on celebrities to lead social change; they are, at best, amplifiers rather than architects of meaningful progress.

口语 Speaking

Part 1

Q: Do you follow any celebrities on social media?
Not many, to be honest. I follow a couple of journalists and writers whose work I respect. I'm more interested in what they have to say than in their personal lives. I suppose I'm quite selective about who I let into my feed.
💡 用hedging(to be honest, I suppose)和地道表达(let into my feed),显得自然而有主见。
Q: What kinds of people become famous in your country?
A real mix, actually. You've got your film stars and athletes, of course, but increasingly, internet personalities and even activists are gaining a lot of attention. It seems like fame is no longer limited to traditional celebrities; anyone with a unique story or skill can build a following these days.

Part 2 ·

Describe a famous person who you think has had a positive influence on society. You should say: who the person is; what they are famous for; how they have used their influence for good; and explain why you think they are a positive role model.
I'd like to talk about Emma Watson, the actress. She's, of course, famous for her role in the Harry Potter films, but what really sets her apart for me is her advocacy for gender equality. She became a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and launched the HeForShe campaign, which calls on men to join the fight for women's rights. She's used her fame not to sell products, but to spark important conversations. She's well-spoken and thoughtful, and she seems genuinely committed rather than just jumping on a bandwagon. I think she's a positive role model because she proves that you can be successful and use that success to uplift others. She doesn't shy away from difficult topics, and she handles criticism with grace. In an industry often criticised for being shallow, she stands out as someone with real substance.
💡 内容丰富,覆盖了所有要点,使用大量精准搭配(set her apart, advocacy, spark conversations, jumping on a bandwagon, uplift others, handles criticism with grace, real substance)。

Part 3

Q: To what extent do celebrities influence the opinions of young people?
That's a tricky one. I think the influence is undoubtedly significant, especially given how much time young people spend on social media. But it's not a simple one-way street. Young people are also quite savvy; many can spot when a celebrity is being insincere. So, while a popular figure can certainly spark interest in a topic, I don't think they can completely mold young people's beliefs. It's more about planting seeds than exercising mind control, if you see what I mean.
💡 讨论抽象话题,用hedging(undoubtedly significant, quite savvy, I don't think they can completely...)
Q: Should celebrities be held to a higher moral standard than ordinary people?
That's a fair question. On one level, I think yes, simply because they have such a big platform. With great influence comes great responsibility, you know? But at the same time, they are human, and we all make mistakes. The problem is, when a celebrity makes a mistake, it's magnified a thousand times. I lean towards the view that they don't have to be perfect, but they do have a duty to be mindful of the example they set. It's the price of being in the public eye, I suppose.
(With great influence comes great responsibility),表达自然流畅。

jump on the bandwagon随大流,赶时髦
with great influence comes great responsibility影响力越大,责任越大
