Contrast and balance: whereas, by contrastC1
Whereas + clause, main clause; By contrast, sentence; While/On the one hand... on the other hand...
Whereas older generations value stability, younger people often prioritise flexibility.

Whereas some argue that traditions must be preserved unchanged, others believe that adaptation is essential for survival.
Urban areas have seen rapid modernisation; by contrast, many rural communities maintain their ancestral customs.

✗ Whereas he likes coffee, I like tea.✓ He likes coffee, whereas I like tea. / Whereas he likes coffee, I like tea.
↑ 提分:8.5 档会避免生硬的 on the one hand... on the other hand...,而是通过话题自然带入对立观点,并用 whereas, conversely, the former... the latter 等更灵活的对比手段。
Emphasis: cleft sentences and fronting (restrained)C1
It is ... that/who ...; What ... is ...; Rarely/Seldom do we ...
It is the sense of belonging that makes traditions so powerful. What many people forget is that traditions evolve naturally. 倒装(如 Rarely has a tradition survived unchanged for centuries)克制使用,只在需要强调时才用。

例句

It is the younger generation's detachment from old rituals that concerns many elders.
What distinguishes a living tradition from a dead one is its ability to adapt.

✗ It is tradition what binds people together.✓ It is tradition that binds people together.
强调句必须用 that,不能用 what;what 引导的是另一种 what-cleft。
What some see as progress, others regard as an erosion of identity — a tension that lies at the heart of the debate.

The Limits of Preservation: Why Some Traditions Should Evolve
Is tradition an anchor or a chain? The debate is as old as society itself. On one side, cultural purists argue that traditions are the bedrock of a community's identity and must be defended against change. On the other, reformers insist that nothing alive can stand still, and that a tradition that refuses to adapt is, by definition, already dead. The purist position has undeniable emotional appeal. Traditions link generations, create a shared sense of belonging, and offer comfort in an uncertain world. As one anthropologist put it, 'Rituals are the language of continuity.' To tamper with them, the argument goes, is to risk the very fabric of a society unravelling. Yet, looked at more closely, this view rests on a rather romantic assumption: that traditions are pure remnants of a golden age, handed down unchanged. In reality, even seemingly timeless customs have been reshaped by generations of practitioners. The Japanese tea ceremony, for example, has seen numerous interpretations over the centuries, each absorbing contemporary tastes. What is now defended as 'authentic' was once an innovation. The deeper question, perhaps, is not whether traditions should change—they always do—but how that change is managed. Where adaptation is slow and inclusive, the core values often survive. Where it is abrupt and imposed from outside, the result can be fragmentation and loss. In the end, the most robust traditions are not those frozen in time, but those that have proved their relevance by growing with the society they serve. Preservation at all costs is not only impractical; it can paradoxically accelerate the decline by turning living practice into museum exhibits.

MCQ1.According to the passage, the 'emotional appeal' of the purist position lies in
  • A its historical accuracy
  • B its romantic assumptions
  • C its ability to provide a sense of continuity
Traditions link generations, create a shared sense of belonging, and offer comfort...
TFNG2.The writer believes that traditions have always remained unchanged over time.
✅ FALSE — 第三段明确说:in reality, even seemingly timeless customs have been reshaped...
gap_fill3.The Japanese tea ceremony is used as an example to show that what is seen as 'authentic' was once an ___.
What is now defended as 'authentic' was once an innovation.
matching4.Match the following cause to its effect: abrupt and imposed change → ___.
✅ fragmentation and loss — 第四段:Where it is abrupt and imposed from outside, the result can be fragmentation and loss.

Tutor
So, for your report on the commercialisation of traditional festivals, what did you find to be the most interesting tension?
Leah
Well, on the one hand, people complain that festivals have lost their meaning—that they're just excuses for shopping. But on the other hand, the commercial aspect actually keeps many traditions alive. Without the lantern displays and gift-giving, the Mid-Autumn Festival might have faded away.
Jack
Yeah, but I'm not convinced that's entirely positive. Once something becomes a commodity, the original ritual tends to get distorted. The meaning becomes secondary.
Leah
I see your point, but I think it's a trade-off. Better to have a somewhat commercialised version than no festival at all.
Tutor
That's the core dilemma, isn't it? Any examples that support the idea of positive adaptation?
Jack
Yeah, actually, the Lantern Festival in some cities has evolved to include eco-friendly lanterns, which fits with modern values without losing the visual spectacle.
Tutor
Good example. Make sure your conclusion reflects that nuance.
gap_fill1.Leah argues that without commercial aspects like lantern displays and ___, the Mid-Autumn Festival might have faded away.
✅ gift-giving — Leah 说:Without the lantern displays and gift-giving, the Mid-Autumn Festival might have faded away.
MCQ2.What is Jack's concern about commercialisation?
  • A It makes festivals too expensive
  • B It distorts the original ritual
  • C It encourages materialism
✅ B — Jack 说:Once something becomes a commodity, the original ritual tends to get distorted.
MCQ3.What does Leah call the trade-off she describes?
  • A a necessary evil
  • B a compromise worth making
  • C an acceptable loss
✅ B — Leah 说:Better to have a somewhat commercialised version than no festival at all.
gap_fill4.Jack gives the example of the Lantern Festival using ___ lanterns as a positive adaptation.
考点常在态度细微转变:Jack 一开始说 I'm not convinced,后来却 shows a positive example,说明立场并非绝对。

Some people think that traditions should be preserved unchanged. Others believe that changes are necessary for progress. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Traditions often serve as the cultural glue that binds communities together. Some argue that they must remain untarnished by the passage of time, while others insist that change is not only inevitable but healthy. In my opinion, although preservation has its merits, allowing traditions to adapt is ultimately more beneficial for society. Those in favour of rigid preservation rightly point to the danger of cultural erosion. Where traditions are abandoned too easily, a community can lose its sense of history and identity. Moreover, many ancient practices embody wisdom that has been refined over centuries, and discarding them hastily would be a loss for future generations. Conversely, opponents stress that societies, like living organisms, must evolve to survive. Holding on to obsolete customs can hinder progress and create friction between generations. Furthermore, what appears to be 'pure' tradition is often a relatively recent invention—cultures have always mixed, borrowed and adapted. My own view is that the debate is less about whether traditions change—they inevitably do—and more about how they change. A tradition that rigidly resists all outside influence can become a burden, while one that adapts thoughtfully can retain its essence. It is this dynamic balance, rather than outright preservation or wholesale rejection, that represents the healthiest path forward. In conclusion, while both sides present valid concerns, history shows that traditions do not survive by staying still. We should therefore embrace a living cultural heritage, one that grows with the community it represents.

口语 Speaking

Part 1

Q: Are traditions important to you personally?
To some extent, yes. I mean, I don't follow every old custom, but there are certain family traditions that I really value, like gathering for meals on special occasions. They give me a sense of where I come from, which I think is important in a fast-changing world.
💡 用 hedging(to some extent, I mean)使语气自然,避免绝对化。
Q: Do you think young people today are less interested in traditions?
That's a common perception, but I'm not entirely sure it's accurate. It's true that many young people are less attached to formal rituals, but at the same time, they often express tradition in new ways—through music, fashion, or even food. I think it's less about losing interest and more about reinterpretation.

Part 2 ·

Describe a tradition you think is worth preserving. You should say: what the tradition is; how it is practised; why you think it is important; and explain what challenges it faces today.
One tradition I genuinely believe is worth preserving is the custom of family storytelling, which is still practised in many parts of my country. It’s not a formal ceremony, but more of an evening ritual where grandparents or parents share tales from the past—sometimes historical events, sometimes personal anecdotes. The stories are often repeated over years, but each telling adds a new layer. I think it’s important because it does more than just entertain; it passes on values, moral lessons and a sense of identity. In a way, it’s how we learn who we are. The challenge, obviously, is that in an age of screens and instant entertainment, this sort of quiet oral tradition can seem dull to younger generations. Unless it’s actively encouraged, it risks fading away. So while I wouldn’t force anyone to sit and listen, I do think families should make space for it—because once lost, it’s not easily brought back.
💡 用 personal 而 not formal 的方式描述,细节丰富;自然融入强调结构 (it」s how we learn who we are);最后用 while 让步给出平衡态度。

Part 3

Q: Why do some traditions disappear while others survive?
It often comes down to adaptability. Traditions that can evolve and fit into modern lifestyles tend to last, whereas those that are too rigid or impractical eventually fade out. There’s also an element of emotional connection—if a tradition still speaks to people’s values or helps them mark important moments, it lives on. But if it becomes a hollow ritual, people just walk away from it.
Q: Can globalisation and tradition coexist?
I think they not only can, but often do. Globalisation doesn’t necessarily flatten everything; sometimes it creates a platform for local traditions to reach a wider audience. The danger is when it’s one-way traffic—when a dominant culture overwhelms smaller ones. But in the best cases, you get a sort of creative fusion, where traditions borrow from each other without losing their essence. It’s a delicate balance, but I don’t see it as an either-or situation.
💡 用 not only... but...

It often comes down to...
