Hedging StrategiesC1
使用arguably, in many respects, it may be argued, to some extent等,以及情态动词、副词等
比较:Stress is the biggest problem. → Arguably, stress is one of the biggest problems. 常用手段:情态动词(may, might, could),副词(probably, largely, somewhat),表达(it could be said that, there is a tendency for...)。

例句

Arguably, the most effective approach is to combine therapy with medication.
In many respects, the current system fails to address the root causes of mental illness.

✗ It is obviously that stress is harmful.✓ It is obvious that stress is harmful. / Obviously, stress is harmful.
使用it is + adj.
↑ 提分:8.5档会灵活混合多种hedging手段,且能根据语境选择最合适的微型模糊语(如a little, somewhat, to a certain degree),而不显重复。
Adverbial Connectors for PrecisionC1
这些词比and/but/so更正式和精确。例如:He exercised regularly; consequently, his mood improved. Some argue for medication; conversely, therapy has shown equal effectiveness.

Many people suffer from anxiety in silence; consequently, they fail to seek the help they need.
Exercise can reduce stress; conversely, a sedentary lifestyle may increase anxiety.

✗ He was tired, consequently he stopped studying.✓ He was tired; consequently, he stopped studying. / He was tired. Consequently, he stopped studying.

Is Mindfulness the Answer to Modern Stress?
Mindfulness, once a niche practice, has exploded into the mainstream. From apps to corporate retreats, promises of reduced stress and greater focus are everywhere. Proponents argue that mindfulness is a cost-effective, evidence-based way to combat rising rates of anxiety and burnout. Indeed, studies suggest that regular meditation can reshape the brain, lowering reactivity to stress and improving emotional regulation. Skeptics, however, warn against overhyping a simple technique. They point out that most research has been conducted on small, short-term studies, and that mindfulness is often packaged as a quick fix — a 'mental health band-aid' — that ignores the deeper social and economic factors driving poor mental health, such as job insecurity and loneliness. The truth arguably lies somewhere in between: mindfulness is a valuable tool, but only when embedded in a broader culture that genuinely values well-being, rather than as a substitute for meaningful change.

Some people believe that modern lifestyles contribute to mental health problems and that governments should do more to help. Others think that individuals are responsible for managing their own mental health. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The accelerating pace of modern life has been accompanied by a marked rise in mental health issues, leading to a debate about where responsibility lies. Some argue that governments must take the lead, while others insist that psychological well-being is primarily a personal matter. In my view, both perspectives have merit, but sustainable solutions require a joint effort. Those who call for greater state involvement point to the societal forces at play. In many respects, today’s environment — with its unstable job market, social media pressures and urban isolation — actively undermines mental health. Consequently, critics of the individualist stance argue that simply telling people to ‘look after themselves’ ignores the structural obstacles they face. They believe that governments should invest in accessible mental health services, regulate harmful content online and promote work-life balance, just as they do for physical health. On the other hand, personal responsibility cannot be dismissed. Arguably, no amount of external support can substitute for an individual’s own resilience and self-awareness. People must ultimately make choices that support their well-being: seeking help when needed, maintaining relationships and adopting healthy habits. Moreover, the notion that the state can solve all problems risks fostering dependency. In my opinion, the most effective path forward is a collaborative one. It is through a combination of public policy and personal agency that lasting progress is made. Governments should create enabling environments, but individuals must then use the tools and opportunities available. For instance, offering free counselling is ineffective if people are too embarrassed to attend; conversely, tackling stigma can empower individuals to make use of such services. Only by acknowledging this interdependence can we hope to build a mentally healthier society.

Speaking

Part 1

Q: Do you ever feel stressed?
To be honest, I think everyone does from time to time. I certainly experience stress when I have too many deadlines or when I feel pressured to meet others’ expectations. But I try to manage it by exercising and taking short breaks — it does help.
💡 用to be honest, from time to time等口语化短语,自然回应。
Q: What do you think are the main causes of stress in modern life?
I’d say there are several, but the biggest one is probably the constant connectivity — emails and messages follow us everywhere, so it’s hard to switch off. Also, job insecurity and the pressure to achieve more with less time contribute significantly. Society’s emphasis on success and perfectionism doesn’t help either.

Part 2 ·

Describe an activity that helps you to relax. You should say: what the activity is; when and where you do it; why it helps you to relax; and explain how you feel when you do it.
One activity that I find incredibly relaxing is going for long walks in the park near my house. I try to do this at least three times a week, usually in the early evening when the light is soft and the park isn’t too crowded. What makes it so effective is that it gives me a complete break from screens and constant stimulation. As I walk, I focus on the trees, the sounds of birds and the rhythm of my steps — it’s almost meditative. When I do it, I feel a sense of calm wash over me, and my mind becomes clearer. After about thirty minutes, any stress or anxiety I was holding onto seems to melt away. I honestly think it’s one of the simplest but most powerful habits I’ve developed.
(What makes it so effective is...)、感官描写和比喻(melt away),语言自然流畅,词汇丰富(incredibly relaxing, meditative, wash over me)。

Part 3

Q: How can employers help employees manage stress?
I believe there are several practical steps. Firstly, they can offer flexible working arrangements, which allow people to balance their personal and professional lives more easily. Secondly, providing access to counselling services or mental health days can make a tangible difference. It’s also important that managers are trained to recognise signs of burnout and to encourage an open culture where people feel comfortable discussing their struggles. Ultimately, it’s about creating an environment that supports well-being rather than just paying lip service to it.
Q: Do you think people today are more stressed than in the past?
Arguably, they are. While every era has its challenges, the pace of change and the sheer volume of information we’re exposed to now are unprecedented. That said, we also have a much better understanding of mental health and more tools to deal with it, so it’s not entirely bleak. In many respects, the issue is not just that stress exists, but that we’ve normalised being constantly busy. So, I’d say the intensity has risen, but so has our capacity to address it — if we choose to.
Arguably, That said, In many respects等hedging和衔接手段,表现出辩证思考。

a sense of calm washes over me一种平静感涌上心头,用于描述放松的状态。
