Causal chains (stems from / gives rise to / leads to / contributes to)C1
A stems from B, B gives rise to A, A leads to B, A contributes to B,以及名词形式cause, result, consequence等
The decline in face-to-face interaction stems from the rise of remote work, which in turn gives rise to a greater reliance on digital communication.

A lack of spontaneous interaction stems from the absence of a shared physical workspace.
The rise of telecommuting gives rise to concerns about the erosion of corporate culture.

✗ The problem stems because of poor communication.✓ The problem stems from poor communication.
stems from 是固定搭配,不能用because of。
A, which is largely the result of B, contributes to C, ultimately leading to D.
Parallelism (balanced structures)C1
Remote work offers not only greater flexibility but also better work-life balance.

The company aims to reduce costs, increase efficiency and improve employee satisfaction.
Not only does telecommuting cut commuting time, but it also reduces carbon emissions.

✗ We need to work hard, be creative and to collaborate effectively.✓ We need to work hard, be creative and collaborate effectively.
Remote work offers not only flexibility—it also redefines professional life.

The Hidden Costs of a Home Office
Working from home was once a privilege, but it has rapidly become the norm for millions. While the immediate benefits are well-documented—no commute, greater flexibility, and often improved productivity—there is a growing recognition that this shift is not without social consequences. In particular, the erosion of spontaneous interaction has far-reaching implications for innovation and community cohesion. Humans are inherently social creatures. Much of what we learn and achieve depends on casual encounters: a brief chat by the coffee machine, an impromptu brainstorming session in the hallway. These moments are not easily replicated online. As digital communication replaces face-to-face contact, we risk losing the subtle cues that drive creativity and build trust. Several surveys indicate that hybrid workers often feel less connected to their colleagues, and many report increased feelings of isolation. Moreover, the benefits of remote work are not evenly distributed. Those with larger homes, reliable internet and supportive families thrive, while others—especially younger employees living in shared accommodation—struggle with distractions and a blurring of professional and personal life. Over time, this could widen existing social inequalities. It is not to say that remote work should be abandoned. Rather, we must acknowledge that the convenience it offers may come at a hidden cost, particularly to the social fabric that underpins both thriving organisations and healthy communities.

Tutor
So, have you gathered enough data on the social impact of remote work?
Liam
Yes, I've got some interesting stuff. It seems the lack of informal chat really affects team bonding. A lot of people miss the 'watercooler moments', you know?
Jess
That's what I found too. But on the flip side, productivity figures are actually up, according to the stats we looked at.
Liam
True, but I wonder if that's sustainable. Some studies suggest that without those casual interactions, creativity drops over the long term.
Tutor
That's an important distinction. So what's your conclusion?
Jess
We're leaning towards a hybrid model as the best compromise. You get the best of both worlds—some face-to-face, some remote.
Liam
Yeah, we'll argue that without some in-person contact, things like innovation and trust suffer.
Tutor
Just make sure you back it up with clear examples in your presentation.
MCQ1.What do the students say about productivity figures?
  • A They have dropped sharply.
  • B They have remained unchanged.
  • C They have actually increased.
  • D They are not mentioned.
✅ C — Jess 说 「productivity figures are actually up」。
gap_fill2.Liam mentions that without casual interactions, ______ may drop in the long term.
✅ creativity — 「without those casual interactions, creativity drops over the long term」。
MCQ3.What model do the students favour in their conclusion?
  • A Fully remote work
  • B Fully office-based work
  • C A hybrid model
  • D They have not reached a conclusion.
✅ C — 「We're leaning towards a hybrid model」。
MCQ4.What does the tutor advise them to do?
  • A Collect more survey data
  • B Use clear examples to support their arguments
  • C Keep the presentation shorter
  • D Focus only on productivity
✅ B — 「back it up with clear examples」。
注意信号词:「on the flip side」 引出对照观点,「I wonder if...」

The rise of remote work has harmed social bonds. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Few would deny that remote work has fundamentally altered the way we interact. While I recognise some notable benefits, I largely agree that it has weakened social bonds, a development with troubling implications for both individuals and communities. The most compelling evidence for this view stems from the nature of daily work. In a traditional office, casual encounters are the rule rather than the exception. A spontaneous chat by the coffee machine or an impromptu meeting in the corridor may seem trivial, but it is precisely these moments that build rapport and trust over time. When people work remotely, such opportunities all but disappear, and digital substitutes rarely reproduce the same sense of connection. As a result, employees often report feeling isolated, and team cohesion gradually erodes. Beyond the workplace, the societal consequences are equally worrying. The shared experience of commuting and co-locating in business districts generated a sense of common purpose and community. With the decline of these daily rituals, the fabric of urban life is beginning to unravel. Local businesses that relied on office workers suffer, and the informal networks that held neighbourhoods together weaken. I acknowledge that remote work brings undeniable advantages: flexibility, the elimination of stressful commutes and, for some, increased productivity. However, these gains must be weighed against the hidden costs. Efficiency should not be prioritised at the expense of human connection. In conclusion, while remote work is not without its merits, its impact on social bonds is largely negative. Unless we find new ways to foster genuine community in a digital age, we risk leaving a society that is more efficient but far less connected.

口语 Speaking

Part 1

Q: Have you ever worked or studied remotely? What was it like?
Yes, I did during the pandemic. Initially it felt liberating—no commute, comfortable clothes. But after a while, I started to miss the casual office chats and just being around people. It definitely had its ups and downs.
💡 用 「it had its ups and downs」 自然收尾,展示平衡评价。
Q: Do you think remote work will become more common in the future?
Absolutely, I'd say it's here to stay. Even if many return to the office, a hybrid model is likely to become the norm for most knowledge workers. The technology is already there, and both employees and employers see the benefits, though we'll need to tackle the social side better.
💡 用 「here to stay」 和 「knowledge workers」 显示词汇积累,最后提到 「tackle the social side」 引出深层思考。

Part 2 ·

Describe a time when you felt disconnected from others because of remote work or study. You should say: - when it was - what the situation was - how you felt - and explain what you did to overcome that feeling.
A few months into the first lockdown, I definitely hit a low point. I was working from my tiny flat, and the days started to blur together. I'd finish work, but there was nowhere to go and no one to meet. Even though I was on video calls all day, I felt more isolated than ever. It was strange—technically I was connected, but emotionally I felt completely cut off. To deal with it, I started scheduling virtual coffee chats with colleagues that had no agenda, just a catch-up. I also made a point of taking walks in the park, even if alone. It didn't solve everything, but it helped remind me that I wasn't the only one struggling.
💡 时间、情境、感受、行动四要素覆盖,使用 「hit a low point」, 「blur together」, 「cut off」 等地道用语,结尾有反思。

Part 3

Q: What can employers do to maintain social bonds in a remote workforce?
Well, it requires deliberate effort. I think regular team-building activities help, but they need to be thoughtful, not forced. Perhaps organising occasional in-person meetups or retreats is the most effective. Also, managers should encourage informal communication channels where people can talk about non-work stuff. It's about recreating those 'watercooler moments' online.
💡 用 「deliberate effort」, 「recreating those watercooler moments」 等词汇,论证有深度。
Q: Do you think younger generations will be more comfortable with remote interactions?
I think there's a paradox. On the one hand, they've grown up with technology, so they're more at ease with digital communication. But on the other hand, I suspect they crave real connection just as much. In fact, many young people I know complain about how superficial online communication can feel. So comfort doesn't necessarily mean fulfilment.

technically connected, but emotionally cut off形式上连接,情感上隔绝(对比鲜明)
