Future expressions of probability and limitationC1
is likely to, is expected to, could conceivably, is projected to, it is probable that
Routine jobs are likely to be automated. 而 「could conceivably be replaced」 则表达了更谨慎的推测。

It is likely that many administrative roles will be automated within a decade.
AI could conceivably outperform humans in a range of cognitive tasks.

✗ Automation will definitely cause massive unemployment.✓ Automation is likely to cause significant disruption in employment.
使用 「is likely to」 或 「may」 更合适。
Mixed conditionals / hypothetical conditionsC1
If + past perfect / past simple, would + infinitive
If robots had not been invented, many mundane tasks would still be done by humans.

If governments had invested more in retraining a decade ago, workers today would be better equipped for the digital economy.
If automation were to eliminate all low-skilled jobs, social unrest would almost certainly follow.

✗ If companies will not upskill their staff, they would face problems.✓ If companies do not upskill their staff, they will face problems. / If companies failed to upskill their staff, they would face problems.

Automation and Employment: Myths and Realities
Headlines frequently warn that robots are coming for our jobs. However, while there is little doubt that automation will transform employment, the idea that it will lead to mass unemployment is largely overstated. Many tasks, particularly those that are routine and predictable, can indeed be performed more efficiently by machines. This includes not only manual labour but also a growing number of cognitive tasks, such as data entry and basic analysis. However, jobs that require creativity, social intelligence and complex problem-solving are far more resilient. Even where technology does eliminate roles, it often creates new ones. For instance, the rise of e-commerce has reduced traditional retail employment but generated millions of delivery and logistics positions. The most serious challenge, therefore, is not job loss but job transition. Workers will need to retrain and upskill to stay relevant. Governments and businesses must invest in education and training to avoid widening inequality.

Manager
Good morning, everyone. Today I'd like to talk about the changes we're introducing in our production line. As you know, we're installing new robotic systems to handle the packaging process. I want to reassure you that our goal isn't to replace you, but to redeploy you to more skilled tasks. The robots will take over the repetitive physical work, which will free you up for quality control and machine maintenance. This means we'll be offering training programs over the next six months. You'll all be paid during the training, and those who complete it will receive a certification. My message is: embrace the change, because it's an opportunity to upskill and future-proof your careers. Are there any questions?

Some people think that automation will create a better world of work, with more leisure and higher incomes, while others believe it will cause widespread unemployment and social unrest. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The debate over automation’s impact on employment is far from settled. On one side, optimists envision a future where machines take over drudgery, allowing humans to pursue more creative and fulfilling activities. On the other, pessimists warn of mass job losses and rising inequality. In my opinion, the truth lies somewhere in between, and the outcome will depend largely on how we manage the transition. Those who highlight the benefits point out that automation could boost productivity significantly, leading to cheaper goods and higher living standards. Historically, technological advances have not reduced overall employment; instead, they have shifted workers into new roles. The rise of digital technology, for instance, created entirely new industries. With proper redistribution of gains, a shorter working week and increased leisure are genuinely possible. However, the scepticism is not without substance. Unlike past innovations, AI and robots can replace not only manual but also many cognitive tasks. This could render even skilled professionals redundant, and the benefits might concentrate in the hands of a few, exacerbating inequality. Whole communities dependent on a single industry could be devastated. In my view, while technology itself is neutral, its effects are shaped by policy. Governments need to invest heavily in retraining and social safety nets. A future with less work can be a positive one if the economic gains are shared equitably; otherwise, social unrest is a real risk. Automation is not our fate but our challenge.

口语 Speaking

Part 1

Q: Do you think your job could be done by a robot?
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure. As a teacher, the emotional connection with students is irreplaceable, though some administrative tasks could definitely be automated. I think the human element is still key.
💡 用 hedging(I'm not entirely sure, could definitely)和具体例子,显得自然。
Q: What kind of technology do you use at work?
Quite a lot, actually. I rely on presentation software and online platforms daily. It's hard to imagine going back to the days without them.
💡 自然口语,用了强调句型 'It's hard to imagine'。

Part 2 ·

Describe a piece of technology that has changed the way people work. You should say: what it is; how it is used; what effects it has had; and explain whether you think it is a positive or negative development.
One technology that's truly transformed the workplace is artificial intelligence, particularly in the form of chatbots and automated customer service. These systems can handle a massive volume of inquiries simultaneously, which would be impossible for human staff. The effect has been twofold: on one hand, companies have saved costs and customers get instant responses; on the other, many call centre workers have lost their jobs. In my view, it's a double-edged sword. It boosts efficiency, but it also creates real hardship for those displaced. The key is to ensure that people are retrained for more complex roles. So overall, I'd say it's a tool — how we use it determines whether it's positive or negative.

Part 3

Q: What types of jobs are most likely to be automated in the future?
Routine and repetitive jobs are the obvious candidates. Anything that involves following a predictable pattern, whether in manufacturing or administration, could be done by machines. But surprisingly, even some professional roles like basic accounting or legal research are at risk due to AI's ability to process information. Having said that, jobs that require creativity, empathy and personal interaction are likely to remain. So I think it's less about entire professions and more about specific tasks.
Q: How can society ensure that the benefits of automation are shared fairly?
That's a challenging question. I think a multi-pronged approach is needed. For a start, governments must invest in retraining and lifelong learning so workers can transition. Tax policies could be adjusted to ensure that companies benefiting from automation contribute to a social fund. Some people even propose a universal basic income, though that's controversial. Ultimately, it's about political will and social consensus.

It's a double-edged sword.
