Some people believe that lifelong learning is essential for career success, while others think that formal education at a young age is sufficient. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The importance of education throughout life is a widely debated issue. While some argue that formal schooling in early years is enough, I firmly believe that continuous learning is vital in today's fast-changing world.
On the one hand, a solid formal education provides a strong foundation. Many professions, such as medicine or law, require degrees and qualifications earned through years of study. Once a person has acquired this knowledge and entered the workforce, the immediate need for further education may appear limited. Moreover, family and financial responsibilities often make it difficult for adults to study again.
On the other hand, the demand for new skills is constantly growing. Jobs are evolving, and many tasks are becoming automated. Professionals wanting to stay relevant must regularly update their knowledge. Additionally, lifelong learning is not only about work; it enriches personal life and keeps the mind active. For example, a manager taking a course in data analysis or a retiree learning a language both illustrate the value of education beyond any single career stage.
In my opinion, while formal education lays the groundwork, it is no longer sufficient on its own. The world changes too quickly, and those who stop learning risk being left behind. Therefore, I believe a commitment to lifelong learning is necessary for both career and personal fulfilment.
In conclusion, although initial formal education is important, ongoing learning is crucial to adapt and thrive. Governments and employers should support adults in accessing education at all stages of life.
语法“Professionals wanting to stay relevant must regularly update their knowledge.”用了缩略关系从句「wanting to stay relevant」代替「who want to stay relevant」,简洁地道。
任务“a solid formal education provides a strong foundation”开头段清晰亮明立场,并简要提示后续讨论。
衔接“On the one hand ... On the other hand ... In my opinion ... In conclusion”段落衔接自然,使用经典结构词,逻辑清晰。
词汇“lifelong learning is not only about work; it enriches personal life”使用「enrich」等B2词汇,搭配「not only about」表达递进。
语法“those who stop learning risk being left behind”关系从句「who stop learning」和动名词短语「risk being left behind」展示语法多样性。
↑ 再上一档:冲击7.5+:增加更多元的关系从句(包括非限定性),尝试用名词化结构提升正式度,如「The rapid evolution of the job market necessitates…」;并用更精妙的衔接,减少「on the one hand」等套话,改用「Admittedly…」、「Conversely…」等。
口语 Speaking
Part 1
Q: Did you enjoy learning at school?
Yes, I enjoyed it for the most part, especially subjects like history and English. But I wasn't so keen on maths. I think I prefer learning now because I can choose what I study.
Q: How often do you learn new things nowadays?
Quite often, actually. I try to read articles and watch educational videos regularly. I'm also doing an online course in graphic design at the moment, which is really interesting.
Part 2 ·
Describe a skill you would like to learn in the future. You should say: what the skill is; how you plan to learn it; why you want to learn it; and explain how it might help you.
One skill I've always wanted to learn is public speaking. I'm quite comfortable in small groups, but speaking in front of a large audience makes me nervous. To learn it, I plan to join a local speaking club, where people practise in a supportive environment. I've also found some helpful online tutorials by experienced speakers.
The main reason I want to learn this skill is that it can boost my confidence and help me communicate my ideas more clearly. In my job, I sometimes have to present to clients, and being a better speaker would make those situations much easier. Moreover, I think public speaking is a valuable life skill – it teaches you to organise your thoughts and connect with people. I'm sure that once I improve, I'll feel more comfortable not only at work but in social situations too.
Part 3
Q: Do you think it's easier for older people to learn new things compared to younger people?
I wouldn't say it's easier, but it's not necessarily harder either. Older people often have more life experience and self-discipline, which can be a great advantage. On the other hand, younger people might pick up new technologies faster. I think the key is motivation – if someone truly wants to learn, age isn't a major barrier.
Q: How do you think technology has changed the way adults learn?
It's revolutionised adult learning. With online courses, people can study at their own pace and from anywhere. They can also access a huge range of resources, from video lectures to interactive exercises. However, I think some skills, like hands-on practical work, are still best learned in a physical classroom. So, technology is a great tool, but it might not replace all traditional methods.
💡 展现批判性思维,使用「at their own pace」, 「hands-on」等搭配,以及对比「still best learned」。
I'm currently doing a course in...
It can boost my confidence —
pick up (a skill) — 学会,习得(口语化)
