Inversion and emphasis for nuanced argumentC2
Not only ... but also ... ; Rarely ... ; Only by ... ; Indeed ...
Only by fostering social empathy can we hope to heal divisions. 或 Not only does inequality harm individual opportunity, but it also weakens societal cohesion.
Only by carefully calibrating where collective action is genuinely indispensable and where individual autonomy must remain inviolate can we maintain a just society.
Rarely is there a one-size-fits-all answer to social challenges.
✗ Only by carefully calibrating we can maintain a just society. → ✓ Only by carefully calibrating can we maintain a just society.
Qualifying generalizations with hedgingC1
Broadly speaking, ... ; For the most part, ... ; To a large extent, ... ; In many respects, ...
Broadly speaking, multicultural societies tend to be more creative, though not without challenges. 或 For the most part, policies aimed at reducing inequality are well-intentioned.
Broadly speaking, no person is an island; our choices invariably affect others.
For the most part, such interventions are accepted when they are transparent and proportionate.
✗ For the most part, all interventions are accepted. → ✓ For the most part, such interventions are accepted.

The Limits of Individual Freedom in Times of Crisis
It is a curious feature of our public debate that whenever a crisis strikes, we immediately start arguing about rights. During the pandemic, the tension between personal liberty and collective welfare became sharper than at any point in living memory. Those who resisted masks and lockdowns often invoked the sanctity of individual freedom; those who supported them stressed the duty to protect the vulnerable. Both sides, in their own way, claimed the moral high ground.
But this framing is too simplistic. Individual freedom does not exist in a vacuum; it is always embedded in a social context. As the philosopher John Stuart Mill argued, my liberty to swing my fist ends where your nose begins. In a deadly pandemic, the refusal to wear a mask is not a purely personal choice—it directly endangers others. There is, broadly speaking, no absolute liberty to harm.
Yet the collective argument also has its limits. To treat emergency measures as a permanent template would be a mistake. History shows that powers seized during a crisis tend to linger, and a society that becomes too comfortable with surveillance and control may find it hard to reclaim lost freedoms. For the most part, democratic societies function best when they maintain a healthy tension between the two poles.
The challenge, therefore, is not to choose one side or the other, but to determine where the boundary lies in each specific case. This requires a level of public deliberation that is often in short supply. It is easier to take refuge in slogans than to engage in the messy business of weighing values. Yet only by accepting this complexity can we design policies that are both effective and respectful of fundamental rights. Rarely has the issue been so starkly posed as it was in the recent health crisis, and rarely have the consequences of getting the balance wrong been so severe.

Tutor
Jack, your essay argued that compulsory community service would be a violation of personal freedom. But do you think all civic duties should be voluntary?
Jack
Not entirely. I see a line between essential duties, like paying taxes, and optional ones, like volunteering. Making community work mandatory feels like forced labour to me.
Ella
I disagree. I think if it's structured as part of education, say in secondary schools, it teaches responsibility and empathy. It's not about forcing labour; it's about broadening horizons.
Tutor
Ella, you seem to be suggesting that the benefits outweigh the coercion. But how do you guarantee it doesn't simply breed resentment?
Ella
That's a valid concern. However, research suggests that when such programmes are well-run, participants often end up valuing the experience. The key is in the design—it shouldn't be punitive.
Jack
But even well-designed, you're still compelling someone to give up their time for what someone else deems 'good'. That's a dangerous principle.
Tutor
So the core disagreement is over the principle of compulsion itself, rather than the potential outcomes?
MCQ1.What is Jack’s main objection to compulsory community service?
A) It doesn't teach enough.
B) It violates personal freedom in principle.
C) It's too expensive.
MCQ2.According to Ella, what is needed to avoid resentment?
A) Punishment for refusal.
B) A well-designed programme.
C) More coercion.
(The key is in the design—it shouldn't be punitive.)。
gap_fill3.Jack compares mandatory community work to ______.
✅ forced labour — Jack 说 Making community work mandatory feels like forced labour to me.。
gap_fill4.Ella mentions that participants often ______ the experience if the programme is well-run.
✅ value — Ella 说 participants often end up valuing the experience.。
TFNG5.The tutor believes compulsion is always wrong.
(That's a valid concern.),再提出自己的观点。
Some people think that modern societies need more emphasis on collective responsibility, while others believe that individual freedom should be paramount. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
The debate over whether modern societies should prioritise collective responsibility or individual freedom is often cast in absolute terms, but a more nuanced view is needed. In my opinion, while both values are essential, the emphasis must shift towards collective responsibility in certain domains without undermining fundamental liberties.
The case for individual freedom is compelling and deeply rooted in democratic traditions. It fosters innovation, personal growth and protects against state overreach. However, an uncompromising focus on the individual can lead to a fragmented society where the vulnerable are left behind. Broadly speaking, no person is an island; our choices invariably affect others, from public health to environmental sustainability.
On the other hand, arguments for collective responsibility recognise that many modern challenges—pandemics, climate change, economic inequality—cannot be tackled by individuals alone. Proponents rightly argue that governments and communities must intervene, sometimes restricting personal choice, to serve the common good. For the most part, such interventions are accepted when they are transparent and proportionate. Yet the danger is that excessive collectivism may stifle dissent and pave the way for authoritarianism.
The crux of the issue is balance. Only by carefully calibrating where collective action is genuinely indispensable and where individual autonomy must remain inviolate can we maintain a just society. Rarely is there a one-size-fits-all answer. Thus, I advocate a pragmatic approach: foster a strong sense of shared duty, but ring-fence essential freedoms through robust democratic institutions. In practice, this means, for example, mandatory vaccination during a pandemic can be justified, while routine surveillance of private communication cannot.
In conclusion, the goal is not to choose between the two but to constantly negotiate their boundaries. A healthy society is one that respects the dignity of the individual while enabling collective solutions to collective problems.

Q: Do you think young people today feel a sense of responsibility towards their community?
To some extent, yes. I see many of my peers getting involved in environmental or social causes, and there's a growing awareness that individual actions matter. But I'd say it's patchy; for some it's a priority, for others it barely registers. It depends a lot on upbringing and education, I suppose.
Q: Have you ever volunteered for a community project?
I have, actually. A couple of years ago I spent a summer helping to organise a local food bank. It was eye-opening; you get a much clearer sense of the inequalities that exist beneath the surface. I wouldn't say I'm a natural altruist, but the experience definitely made me more empathetic.
💡 自然叙述中加入反思(inequalities beneath the surface, not a natural altruist),展示语言深度。
Part 2 ·
Describe a time when you worked on a community project. You should say: what the project was; who you worked with; what you did; and explain how you felt about it.
The project that springs to mind is the food bank I mentioned. It was set up during the first lockdown to help families who'd suddenly lost income. I worked alongside a mix of people—some were seasoned volunteers, others, like me, were first-timers. My role was fairly unglamorous: sorting donations, packing boxes, occasionally delivering. What struck me most was the sheer scale of need. You read about poverty in the news, but seeing it up close is a different thing entirely. The work was tiring, but there was a real sense of solidarity. It felt like we were all pulling in the same direction. On reflection, it made me question some of my earlier assumptions about welfare—that it's all a matter of personal responsibility. The truth is far more complicated. So, overall, it was a humbling experience that I'm glad I had.

Part 3
Q: Should community service be mandatory in schools?
That's a tough one. On the one hand, I can see the benefits: it exposes young people to realities outside their bubble and teaches values that are hard to learn from textbooks. On the other hand, making it compulsory risks reducing it to a box-ticking exercise. I think a middle ground might be to offer it as a strongly encouraged option, with proper support and recognition, so that it's voluntary but with real institutional backing. That way you get the commitment without the resentment.
Q: What role should corporations play in supporting social cohesion?
A significant one, in my view. Corporates have immense resources and influence; they can't just claim to be entirely separate from the communities they operate in. That said, their involvement must be genuine, not just a PR exercise. When a firm genuinely aligns its business practices with social goals—say, paying fair wages or reducing its environmental footprint—that's far more valuable than a one-off donation. But it requires accountability, and that's where I think government regulation plays a part.
💡 深入论述企业社会责任,使用商务地道表达(aligns its business practices, a one-off donation),衔接自然。
