The Rise of Tourism
Tourism has become one of the world's largest industries, with millions of people travelling abroad each year. While it brings many benefits, such as economic growth and cultural exchange, there are also concerns about its impact on local communities and the environment. In many countries, tourism is a major source of income. Hotels, restaurants, and local tour operators all benefit from visitor spending. In Thailand, for example, tourism directly accounts for around 12% of the country's GDP. This income can be used to improve public services and infrastructure. However, the rapid growth of tourism has placed great pressure on natural resources. In popular destinations, water shortages have been reported as hotels and golf courses consume large amounts of water. Furthermore, the construction of new resorts often leads to the destruction of mangroves and coral reefs, which are essential habitats for marine life. Overcrowding is another problem that affects both tourists and residents. In Venice, an estimated 30 million visitors arrive each year, a number that far exceeds the city's capacity. This has led to rising rents and the loss of local shops, forcing many Venetians to move away. To address these issues, some destinations are now promoting sustainable tourism. By encouraging travellers to visit during the off-season and supporting eco-friendly businesses, they hope to balance the economic benefits with environmental protection. Ultimately, the future of tourism depends on finding ways to grow responsibly.

Liam
Hi Chloe, have you started the research for our tourism assignment yet?
Chloe
Yes, I've been reading about the environmental impact. It's quite serious, actually.
Liam
Really? I thought tourism was mostly a good thing for the economy.
Chloe
Well, it does bring in money, but the negative effects can be huge. For instance, in Bali, the water supply has been severely affected by the number of hotels.
Liam
I didn't know that. So what solutions are being discussed?
Chloe
Some places are introducing taxes on tourists to fund conservation, and others are limiting visitor numbers at popular sites.
Liam
Limiting numbers sounds like a good idea. But wouldn't that hurt the local businesses?
Chloe
That's the concern. But if they can attract higher-spending tourists who stay longer, it might balance out.
Liam
I suppose we need to find a way to have sustainable tourism without killing the economy.
Chloe
Exactly. Our assignment is to propose a plan for that, isn't it?
MCQ1.What assignment are the students working on?

写作 Writing Task 2 (essay) · 目标 250 词

Some people think that tourism has more advantages than disadvantages for a country. Others believe the opposite. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Tourism has grown rapidly in recent decades, and opinions differ on whether its benefits outweigh its drawbacks. While I acknowledge that there are significant advantages, I believe that the negative impacts cannot be ignored and that steps must be taken to manage them. On the one hand, tourism can be highly beneficial for a country's economy. It creates jobs in sectors such as hospitality, transport, and retail. Moreover, the money spent by tourists can boost local businesses and generate tax revenue, which governments can then use to improve public services and infrastructure. For example, many coastal towns have developed because of visitor spending. On the other hand, tourism often leads to environmental and social problems. Popular destinations may suffer from overcrowding, which puts pressure on local resources like water and energy. In addition, the construction of hotels and resorts can destroy natural habitats. There is also the risk that local cultures become commercialised and lose their authenticity. In my view, the disadvantages can be serious, but they are not inevitable. If governments introduce sensible regulations—such as limiting visitor numbers in sensitive areas and investing in sustainable tourism—they can minimise the harm. Travellers also have a role to play by choosing eco-friendly options and respecting local customs. In conclusion, while tourism brings clear economic benefits, it is essential to manage its negative effects. I strongly believe that with careful planning, countries can enjoy the advantages of tourism while protecting their environment and culture.

口语 Speaking

Part 1

Q: Do you like travelling?
Yes, I really enjoy travelling. I love exploring new places and learning about different cultures. For me, it's not just about sightseeing; it's about experiencing how other people live.
💡 先直接回答,再展开解释,用exploring new places/not just...but...句型。
Q: What kind of places do you like to visit?
I'm quite interested in historical cities and places with beautiful scenery. I find that cities like Kyoto or Rome have so many stories to tell, and the architecture is often breathtaking.
💡 给出具体例子,并描述原因,使用breathtaking等形容词。
Q: How often do you travel?
Unfortunately, I don't get to travel as much as I'd like because of work and studies. But I try to take a short trip at least twice a year, even if it's just for a weekend.
💡 频率+原因+努力,展示自然停顿和转折词unfortunately。

Part 2 · 提示卡

Describe a place you have visited that was affected by tourism. You should say: where it was; what it was like when you visited; what effect tourism had on the place; and how you felt about it.
A couple of years ago, I visited a small fishing village in Thailand that had become quite popular with tourists. When I was there, the beach was packed with sunbeds and the main street was lined with souvenir shops. It was very different from the peaceful picture I had imagined. The effect of tourism was obvious. Local fishermen had turned their boats into tourist boats, and many traditional houses had been converted into guesthouses. While I could see that the tourism had brought money to the village, I felt that it had lost some of its original charm. There were just too many people and the atmosphere was very commercialised. I remember feeling a bit disappointed, honestly. I think it's a pity when a place becomes so focused on tourists that it forgets its own identity.
💡 涵盖所有提示点;用过去时叙述,表达感受时用情态动词及表达情感的词汇(disappointed, a pity)。使用了while从句表示对比。

Part 3

Q: What are the benefits of tourism for a country?
Well, the most obvious benefit is economic. Tourism creates employment and brings in foreign currency. It can also lead to better infrastructure, like roads and airports, which benefit locals too. Additionally, tourism can encourage the preservation of cultural heritage, because if a site attracts tourists, there's more motivation to keep it in good condition.
💡 列举三点:经济、基建、文化遗产保护,用also, additionally衔接。
Q: Do you think it is possible to have tourism without harming the environment?
It's definitely a challenge, but I think it is possible to some extent. What's needed is strict regulations and a real commitment to sustainability. For example, placing limits on visitor numbers at fragile sites, requiring eco-friendly construction, and educating travellers. But it also requires tourists themselves to be more responsible, like not littering and respecting wildlife. So, yes, it's possible, but it requires cooperation from governments, businesses, and individuals.
💡 先表态,再给方案,最后总结条件,体现辩证思维。
Q: How has tourism changed in your country in recent years?
In my country, tourism has grown enormously. We've seen a huge increase in international visitors, especially in the main cities. This has led to more hotels and tour services, but also to higher prices and some overcrowding. Interestingly, there's also a trend towards more eco-tourism and rural tourism, as people look for more authentic experiences. So, I'd say the market is diversifying, which is a positive development.
💡 描述变化,提到数量增长、新趋势,用interestingly作评价。
